Remote Control and Management
LANsurveyor allows you to closely monitor and manage other computers across the network, saving you time and precious resources.
Remote management features are only available for computers with Neon Responder, and integration with third party software is available for telnet as well as AT&T's VNC or Netopia's Timbuktu screen sharing programs.
This tutorial covers several management operations:
First Steps
Before you try any parts of this tutorial, open the map you created in Draw Your Network Map or create a new map that includes all your Neon Responders. Make sure you have selected the Neon Responder option in the TCP/IP services section of the Create New Network Map dialog box.

Then select the computers you would like to manage directly on the map by shift-clicking on the icons or use the Select Neon Responders option on the Navigate menu.

Finally, click the Manage icon on the LANsurveyor toolbar to display the Manage dialog box or select the desired option from the Manage menu.

Shut Down or Restart
You can use LANsurveyor to shut-down and restart remote machines, allowing you to complete software installations remotely or shut down computers as needed.
Just click on either Shut Down or Restart.

LANsurveyor displays the Schedule Management operation dialog box. Tell LANsurveyor when you want to shut down or restart: now or at a scheduled time. Pick "now", and LANsurveyor will restart or shut down each of the computers selected on the LANsurveyor map.

Synchronize Clocks
Use LANsurveyor to synchronize clocks on one or more systems to correct system times or adjust for daylight savings time changes.
Select Sync Clock from the Management window, then schedule the operation. All the selected computers will synchronize to a single date and time.

Send File or Folder
Schedule file and folder distribution, remotely and easily. The distribution process is simple and automated, ideal for upgrading applications or distributing software updates.
Select Send File or Send Folder, then schedule the operation. The file or folder will be sent on the schedule you specified.
If you send a file with a ".sit" extension to a Mac OS or Mac OS X system with version 5.0 or new Neon Responder, LANsurveyor will automatically extract the files from the archive.

Send an Instant Message
Communicate immediately through LANsurveyor to any and all Neon Responder-enabled nodes. Select Send Message from the Manage menu, then type your message into the Send Message dialog box and press OK.

You can choose to send the message immediately or schedule the message for a later time. The message is then displayed on the other computers.

Store Notes
LANsurveyor allows you to store up information in up to 10 customized note fields on client computers. Information such as asset tag numbers, email addresses, department, and telephone extensions can be stored and then used in reports or simple queries.
Click on Store Notes and then enter the information you would like to store on the remote nodes. You can change the default note labels by selecting Note Labels from the Options menu.

Quit Process
Quit software applications remotely to solve system problems or aid in remote software installations. Quit Process is only available when selecting a single node.

Once you click on Quit Process, a list of the applications and processes running on the selected computer are displayed. Just click on a process and click OK to stop that process.
Launch Application
Launch software applications to assist with software installations and troubleshooting. Launch Application is only available when selecting a single node.
Once you click on Launch Application, LANsurveyor queries the node and displays a list of the available applications. Just click on an application and click OK to launch that application.
Screen Share
LANsurveyor integrates with third party applications. You can directly launch screen sharing with AT&T's free VNC or Netopia's Timbuktu or open a telnet session directly from the map.

LANsurveyor communicates with the programs to launch the program and open communications with the selected client. |
